How to Clean a Double-Layer Litter Mat (In Under a Minute)
Share
A double-layer litter mat does the hard work of trapping litter. Your job is just to empty it now and then. Here's the quick routine.
Everyday emptying (about 10 seconds)
- Lift the mat and carry it to the litter box or a trash bag.
- Open the mat along its open edge.
- Tilt it and pour the trapped litter back into the box (clean litter) or into the trash.
- Give it a light shake and put it back where your cat exits.
Tip: empty it over the box so nothing spills on the floor.
Deep cleaning (every 1–2 weeks)
- Empty the mat as above.
- Rinse it with lukewarm water in the shower, bathtub or outside with a hose.
- For stains or odors, use a little mild, unscented soap. Avoid bleach and strong-smelling cleaners — cats are sensitive to scent and may avoid the mat.
- Shake off excess water and let it air dry completely before putting it back.
You can also run a vacuum over the top surface between deep cleans.
How often should I empty it?
For one cat, every 2–3 days is usually enough. With multiple cats or heavy diggers, empty it daily. A full mat traps less, so regular emptying keeps it working.
What about accidents?
The waterproof bottom layer keeps liquid on top of the mat instead of soaking into your floor. Wipe up right away, then rinse and dry the mat.
