How to Stop Cat Litter Tracking: 7 Tips That Actually Work

If you live with a cat, you know the feeling: you sweep around the litter box in the morning, and by evening there's grit on the floor again. Litter tracking is one of the most common complaints of cat owners — and the good news is that a few small changes make a big difference.

Why do cats track litter?

Cats dig, cover and then jump out of the box. Granules get stuck between their toe pads and in the fur around their paws, and fall off a few steps later. Long-haired cats, energetic diggers and cats using a small box usually track the most.

1. Put a trapping mat where your cat exits

The single most effective fix is a mat placed exactly where your cat steps out. A double-layer honeycomb mat works best: litter falls through the holes in the top layer and stays trapped between the layers instead of being carried further. When it's full, you pour it back into the box.

2. Choose the right mat size

A mat that's too small only catches the first step. Pick one that extends at least 6 inches beyond the box entrance. Covered boxes, multi-cat homes and big kickers need a larger mat.

3. Use a box with higher sides or a lid

High-sided or covered boxes reduce how much litter gets kicked out during digging. Just make sure the entrance is still easy for your cat to use.

4. Try a lower-tracking litter

Larger granules, pellets and some clumping formulas stick to paws less than very fine litter. If you switch, mix the new litter in gradually over a week so your cat accepts it.

5. Don't overfill the box

About 2–3 inches of litter is enough for most cats. More litter means more to dig, kick and carry out.

6. Trim paw fur on long-haired cats

Tufts of fur between the toes act like little brushes. A careful trim (or a groomer visit) noticeably reduces tracking.

7. Empty the mat regularly

A full mat can't trap more litter. Empty it every few days — it only takes a few seconds with a double-layer mat.

The quick answer

If you only do one thing, put a properly sized double-layer mat where your cat exits the box. The PawProof mat comes in 3 sizes and 6 colors, and it's waterproof, so it protects your floor too.
