What Size Litter Mat Do I Need? A Simple Guide
Share
Choosing a litter mat size sounds simple, but it's the most common reason a mat "doesn't work." A mat only traps litter if your cat actually walks across it after leaving the box. Here's how to get it right.
Rule of thumb: 6 inches past the exit
Measure the side of the box your cat jumps out from. Your mat should cover that width and extend at least 6 inches beyond it, so your cat takes a couple of steps on the mat before reaching the floor.
Match the mat to your box type
- Open / standard trays: cats exit from different sides, so place the mat on the side they use most. A small or medium mat usually works.
- Covered / hooded boxes: there's one exit, which makes things easy. Center the mat in front of the door; medium or large works best.
- Top-entry boxes: litter falls from paws as cats hop down. A medium mat in front of the box catches most of it.
- Large or self-cleaning boxes: these are wide, so choose a large mat.
Consider your cat
Multiple cats sharing one box, long-haired cats and enthusiastic diggers spread litter further. If that sounds like your home, size up.
